I recently won an Owlet Smart Sock 2 on Instagram (so exciting!) I knew that I wanted to do an honest review, since this was my first experience with the product and because it is a higher end item. I wanted to know if it was worth the money and if it really worked! When I got the sock, my son was already 5 months old. I didn’t really see a use for it because he was already out of the “scary” zone when it comes to sleep. I tried it for one night and didn’t really think I needed it anymore. When my son cries, I can hear him on the monitor.
I put the sock away and a few weeks later I bought the DockaTot because I was desperate for my son to sleep! (Review on that coming soon!)
Once I read that the DockATot was unsafe to put into cribs, I knew if I was going to do this (because my son was now 7 months old) I wanted to use the Owlet Smart Sock. He is old enough to roll over and get himself out of compromising situations most of the time, but I wanted to be SURE that he was safe all night. If he started losing oxygen or his heart rate went up, I wanted to know. This sock has given me the comfort of knowing that my baby is safe at night and if he isn’t, I’ll get a notification.
I’ll try to make this short and sweet!
What is the Owlet Smart Sock 2?
The Smart Sock tracks your baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels while the sock is placed on the baby’s foot. A base station is connected through wi-Fi, which will set off an alarm if anything seems to be wrong. There is also an Owlet app which allows you to check notifications, as well as the baby’s current heart rate and oxygen level.
Is it comfortable?
The Smart Sock does have a monitor in it, which makes for a chunky hard piece that does press against your baby’s foot. The fabric around the sock is soft, so I don’t think my baby notices it. He hasn’t seemed irritated by it at all. This is surprising since he was already 6/7 months old when I started using it. It can be used for newborns, which would most likely get babies used to it much quicker.
How long can I use it for?
The Owlet Smart Sock monitor comes with 3 socks, for newborns, up to 4 months, and 4 months plus (usually to 18 months or so). In my opinion, I probably wouldn’t use this past one year old, unless your baby has health issues or really could be at risk at night.
Can I resell it or give it to a friend?
Yes! One great thing about this product, is that you can sell it or pass it on to a friend. It is a pricey product, so knowing that you can maybe get some money back or help a friend out is a great feeling!
Is the app helpful?
I use the app to monitor my baby’s sleep when I’m not around my video monitor. For instance, if I’m in a different room or if I’m teaching online in the morning and want to check in, I can quickly look at it. If the app says, “readings normal,” that means he’s sleeping and everything is good! If it says, “Harper is wiggling,” I know he is waking up (or just readjusting himself).
Is it worth the money?
I do think it is worth the money. It really gives parents a peace of mind without having to check to see if their baby is breathing throughout the night. It’s also great when you might have a belly sleeper, which can increase the risk of SIDS. Even if you can’t afford it or don’t want to spend your money on this, put it on the registry!
